Contestant Information

With the success of the StreetSalsa Come Dancing Launch Party last week, attention is turning to exactly how the competition is going to run.  So here goes!

The Pairing Up – 24th Sept

At Hifi on Wednesday 24th of September, we’ll be introducing our celebrities and pairing each of them up with a professional.  Get booked on to the Facebook event for all the details.

It’s no big deal if you can’t make this event, you can still compete…

Then from the 1st October, the competition starts in earnest.

First week is merengue – remember – if you can walk you can merengue, it’s a really simple dance!

Because of the large number of couples, initially we’ll be splitting the dance styles over two heats.  This is good, because it means you don’t have to make every Wednesday.

Each of our couples will perform each style once, in whichever heat they can make it to.

The performances will last one minute and be 100% freestyle – so there’s no need to come up with a routine, although you will have to let us know which track you want to dance to.

Heats / Dance Styles

  • 1st October – Merengue – Heat 1
  • 8th October – Merengue – Heat 2
  • 15th October – Cross Body Salsa – Heat 1
  • 22nd October – Cross Body Salsa – Heat 2
  • 29th October – Cuban Salsa – Heat 1
  • 5th November – Cuban Salsa – Heat 2
  • 12th November – Street Salsa – Heat 1
  • 19th November – Street Salsa – Heat 2
  • 26th November – Cha Cha
  • 3rd December – Semi Final – Lindy Hop
  • 10th December – Grand Final – Charleston, Bachata, Favourite Style

After each performance, our judges will give constructive feedback – so there’ll be no nasty comments!  Only positivity.

They will also score each couple. The scores will be added together and the couples with the lowest scores will face the Friday dance off…

After both heats have been completed, the couples at the bottom of the scoreboard will return to dance again on Friday at Chilli White.  The judges will then decide who will be eliminated from the competition.

During the Monday night classes at Smokestack, we’ll be running a crash course in each dance – so you can get ready for the competition on Wednesday.  So for the next few weeks we’re going to be doing plenty of Merengue!

Any questions?  Please let me know if there are dates you definitely can’t make and I’ll try to work around them!

Nearly a decade ago, I resolved to run a salsa night the way I thought it should be run and the idea for StreetSalsa was born.  The rest as they say is history..

I've made some of the best friends you could wish for through dancing, and want to share what a life-changing experience dance can be.

Nope, the heats start next week.  Tonight we'll be matching celebrities with their professionals.  Karen, we'll be covering the various dance styles on a Monday if you'd like to practice :) xx
