We're pleased to today announce the dance styles we'll be including in StreetSalsa Come Dancing 2014! The competition will cover a range of street partner dance styles. But first, what does street dance even mean?
A street dance is any style of dance which evolved outside of a dance studio. Street dances instead develop in open spaces such as streets, parties and nightclubs - where the focus is on improvisation and having fun in a social setting. Dances like salsa, locking and breakdancing.
This is in contrast to the ballroom dancing you see on the TV around this time of year, where the focus is on performance and perfect technique. Everything is choreographed and strictly regimented - hands must be placed so, posture must be like so etc...
This is StreetSalsa Come Dancing, so every performance you will see will be 100% freestyle!
And what's more, the focus of the judging will be on connection with your partner, improvisation, flow, musicality and creativity.
NOT, where your hands are positioned and the strength of your top line!
OK, drum roll please... The styles we'll be including in StreetSalsa Come Dancing are:
We're not letting anything else slip at the moment - but what I will say, is that the focus of the competition will be on participation and having fun - we certainly won't be taking ourselves too seriously!
Stay posted for more competition details. I for one can't wait for the launch party on Wednesday! For now, make sure that you're down as attending the launch party on Facebook and you'll hear the news as it's released...
Nearly a decade ago, I resolved to run a salsa night the way I thought it should be run and the idea for StreetSalsa was born. The rest as they say is history..
I've made some of the best friends you could wish for through dancing, and want to share what a life-changing experience dance can be.
Woooop happy to see Cuban and Bachata in there! Xx
Ooh and Merengue! Got too excited and posted too soon x
Oh wow! This is going to be a real spectacle :)
so looking forward to new styles and music!
Merengue is up first, because well, if you can walk - you can merengue! And it gives our partnerships more time to practice the more difficult dances :)
sounds great! which styles is everyone looking forward to? I love them all, can't wait to learn charleston though!
Bachata for me, I absolutely love it! X
