Whilst listening to Jakes next 10 tracks for Clandestina the other night (and there are some crackers) he asked me what my favourite song to salsa to is. This I found incredibly difficult to answer as there are so many songs I am in love with currently, both pure salsa and not.
After giving it some thought I came to the conclusion that whether I like a song is more often than not dependent on if I have had a good dance to it; the memories which resurface every time I later hear that tune make me want to listen to it more and more. Is this the same for anyone else? What is your favourite song to salsa to at the moment and why?
I love to drink, dance and travel. Even better if I can do them all at the same time ;)
I don't think I know salsa music well enough yet to have a favourite - for me a lot of my 'faves' are salsa versions of songs I already know, because they stick in my mind. The 'pure' ones (or the ones full of Spanish!) are less likely to stick as I tend to learn songs by lyrics....so not speaking Spanish makes this difficult lol.
I do agree with regards to songs being associated with good dances - I absolutely love "Higher Love" as I have had so many good Weds night dances to that one, and a current fave is "Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone" after a really fun dance to that with Richard a few weeks back.
Other than that, I tend to find I like the more 'cuban' music, and stuff that leans towards reggaeton...probably because that's where my salsa life started. And I like to pretend I'm "street". (lol)
Well, what a question! My "favourite" song tends to change on a weekly basis, and I keep my StreetSalsa profile updated to reflect the latest belter!
If I had to name an all-time favourite... That would be the salsa version of Valio La Pena by Marc Anthony.
There are also songs that I wouldn't necessarily love listening to, but LOVE to dance to. And it's amazing how a track might come on and I get a specific dancer in my mind!
Superstition (not a salsa song but great for dancing to) will have me making a beeline for Rosa or Allison. And I'll never forget the time This Is Not A Tango came on and I turned around to greet Hannah with "I NEED YOU FOR THIS!"
There's so much to make a good song. For me songs that really help me to "dick around" with my musicality are sure to be winners!
I do love dancing to pure salsa music, but I must admit the songs I have the most fun with are songs I know already or salsa versions of them. The dream is to be able to sing and dance at the same time.
I am loving the salsa version of 'Ain't No Sunshine' at the moment, and I will always be partial to some JT or Sean Paul on the dance floor.
Yeah the Ain't No Sunshine track is great, guaranteed to fill the dance floor. I usually have a favourite salsa track, but it's an ever changing thing. And I usually have a favourite non-salsa track I like dancing to as well.
My favourite track is changing faster than usual at the moment, with all the music discovery I'm doing for Clandestina I keep finding absolute bangers!
But for a long time it was this, still guaranteed to put a smile on my face - Ave Maria Lola by Sonora Carruseles:
