Merengue - Judging Criteria

Posted by Jake on 1st October 2014

Tonight at Hifi will be the first competitive heat of StreetSalsa Come Dancing.  Contestants are understandably nervous, but ready to rock!  So how will the performances be judged?

What do you have to do to impress our panel of judges - Carla, Jake, Donna & James?  Other than a cheeky bribe of course ;)

How Will the Judging Work?

First and foremost, StreetSalsa Come Dancing is about fun and participation - to give every contestant their moment in the limelight.  We'll only be giving positive, constructive feedback - so there's no need to worry that we're going to tear you apart.

We're not going to give out the actual scores on the night, instead the judging panel will review the video footage after the event and post the scores here on StreetSalsa Talk.

Merengue Judging Criteria

The judges will be looking for the following when assessing your Merengue Performance:

  • Creativity & Improvisation - in all the dances we'll be awarding marks if you show us something we've never seen before!
  • Connection with Your Partner - throughout the competition we're looking for you to have a good connection with your partner.  We want to see the dance flow and that you are both enjoying yourselves!
  • Musicality - marks will be awarded if you can dance with an appreciation of the music, this one is really subjective, but try to move with the music and really dance through the steps.
  • Merengue Style - rather than any particular moves, we're looking for good timing of your basic step and the style of movements that define Merengue, such as: bending in the knees, movement in the hips, shoulders moving up and down, side-to-side movement in the ribs, nice slow turns and smooth movement between closed and open.  Check out the video below for more info!

How to Dance Merengue Video

Here's a great video that will really give you the flavour of Merengue!  Try and incorporate of much of this as possible in your performance:

All that leaves me to say is good luck! Keeeep Dancing!

Nearly a decade ago, I resolved to run a salsa night the way I thought it should be run and the idea for StreetSalsa was born.  The rest as they say is history..

I've made some of the best friends you could wish for through dancing, and want to share what a life-changing experience dance can be.
