I just realised that it’s been almost exactly 10 years since I first stepped foot in a salsa class… Learning to dance has truly changed my life, so I wanted to make an impassioned plea to the blokes of Leeds to GROW A PAIR, and take a dance class - you won’t regret it.
Prepare to Get Ripped
There’s some deliberate ambiguity in there, dance is great for keeping your trim – but what I was really meaning, is that your friends and family might take the mickey when they find out what you’re doing, or plan to do. My advice? Take the banter on the chin.
My entire family plays rugby – my brothers, my dad, my step-dad, cousins, and sisters, all play rugby.
And trust me, rugby players are good at banter. I’ve heard it all.
“Mine’s a pint, and a shandy for Billy Elliot here.”
But I guarantee you this, they’ll soon be wanting to get involved, even if they’re too scared to step foot through the door. It takes a bigger man to walk into his first dance class, than to shove his head between two men’s farting arses. Real men dance, end of.
“Two left feet!”
If I had a quid for every time I’ve heard the following statement, I’d be a very rich man indeed…
“But I have two left feet, I’m terrible at dancing. No, really terrible. I can’t dance a step.”
Trust me – that’s kind of the point. And you won’t be the worst one there, not that it matters. Everyone starts out the same, nobody will judge you, and a beginners class is packed full of people with ‘two left feet’.
The first time I danced in a club and a group of people watched and clapped, I was left thinking, ‘why on earth didn’t I learn this sooner?’
OK, I’m Up for It - What Next?
Even if you can see the reasons why you really should, it takes a lot of courage to find an event and then actually step through the door. Just check out the stories of our members’ first classes, we’ve all been there.
But as soon as you get the first class out of the way, you’ll instantly feel more confident – and your confidence will only grow the more classes you take.
So all I can say to you is man up, find a beginner class and start the rest of your life. Tell your mates to do one, and know that real men dance.
