A post that's got a lot of heat on our website is Salsa Mojo written by long-time StreetSalsa dancer Sophie. In it she talks about that magical thing - Mojo. How it comes and goes and whether it even exists.
Well I can tell you it definitely exists, and there's nothing worse than losing it.
People lose their dance mojo for all kinds of reasons, like a change in circumstances or simply getting bored. But most often, I think it's down to an increase in awareness. Which should be a good thing, right? Unfortunately, it's not that simple...
When people first start dancing, their confidence rockets and they quickly climb to the top of Mount Mojo. Once they've got the basics, and can dance a track with a variety of moves they hit a real high. They feel on top of the world. And relatively speaking, it doesn't take long.
The crunch comes when they realise just how much more they have got to learn. Previously they were blissfully ignorant of the just what it takes to become a boss. Before they simply didn't know. They descend into The Valley of Lost Mojo as their awareness develops. This is what I call The Dropout Zone, where many people sadly give up and drift away, unaware that what they are going through is perfectly normal.
The good news is that when you hit rock bottom, the only way is up! The Long Climb takes dedication and commitment, but with every ounce of progress the mojo comes back bit-by-bit. It takes a long time to hit the dizzying levels of Mount Mojo again, but it's worth it because now your confidence will be rock solid - in dance and in life.
You achieved something worthwhile - welcome to the 'Groovy Baby!' Summit. So stick at it people, the rewards are there for the taking - you just need to understand what you are feeling and why on the journey.
Have a re-read of Sophie's Post, how many people do you think are describing exactly what you see in the chart above?!
I'll leave you with a quote from Chinese philosopher Confucius - "Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance."
