What makes a dance really special?

Posted by Jake on 6th September 2014

After Calle Ocho last night at the Faversham, we should all have plenty of food for thought on this one!  Some dances are so memorable, they stand out amongst hours of awesome dancing.

I had too many wonderful dances last night to remember them all, but a handful have really stuck in my mind.  Those dances I can remember clearly today - and some I'll still be thinking about in months to come.

But what makes a particular dance really special?  What is about a dance, that leaves you buzzing long after it's finished?

Nearly a decade ago, I resolved to run a salsa night the way I thought it should be run and the idea for StreetSalsa was born.  The rest as they say is history..

I've made some of the best friends you could wish for through dancing, and want to share what a life-changing experience dance can be.

Connection with my lead, because I'm fairly new to Salsa I appreciate a good strong lead. Also a tune I really like helps.....put the two together and that gives me more confidence.

For me, it's all about completely clicking with the lead, and feeling totally at ease, so much so that I just go with it without thinking or worrying/caring about 'going wrong'.  A particular bachata from a few months ago now is completely stuck in my mind, it was amazing.  I came off the dancefloor absolutely on a high and could've stayed dancing with that lead all night.  After having only a couple of bachata lessons I am the first to admit I didn't really know what I was doing but it did not matter one little bit.  The lead did his job completely and took control.  Fab for me because I had the best dance yet with very little effort on my part. Every bachata track I hear now takes me to that feeling. :) xxx

Wow.!! To describe THAT connection?, it's a combination of things for me. Instant connection is the smile, I generally won't dance with a misery or someone who takes it too seriously.

I had a lot of connections at Calle last night, but it's all down to the guy, the strong lead without force or feeling like it's all a fight.

I prefer the man to look me in the eyes without staring of course, someone who looks around the room for his next dance won't be on my next dance list.

The connection is usually a exciting feeling, a feeling of giddiness, feeling feminine, feeling sexy.

The best part of dancing is losing yourself completely, forgetting the bad day you've just had or being judged by your dance partner...

When dancing I can truly be ME

Great comments, completely agree it's all about connection - with my partner, the music and possibly an audience if there is one!

As a lead, there's so much on you to make the dance happen that the really memorable dances are when everything I want to do just seems to click and I manage to hit everything in the music - combined with that great connection you talk about above.

Haha generally don't tend to hit these heights unless I've been dancing solid for at least a few hours!

It's all about energy for me, it kind of builds throughout a night and each dance.

Also, think a big part of connection is when my partner is really relaxed, trusts me, is enjoying themselves and above playful.

Nothing saps my energy like a face like a slapped arse, or a dance that feels like a fight :)

I suppose in summary, it's when all the stars align: music, partnership, moves, energy, playfulness - when you both step away going wow that was pretty special and can't wait to dance again!

And I've just burnt my food, damn this forum!

Haha jake, yep, I get lost in these forums too, I totally agree with everything everyone has said, its all about the connection, the situation ur in at that very moment in time.......I had the funniest dance with CJ on saturday night, dont know if anyone witnessed it but it was special, knowin that it would probably be the last dance with him for a while, we really let our hair and our guards down, every spin and turn ended in a stupid grin or funny face, every error ended in fits of laughter, and at that moment, for that song, there was only us in the room, it was awesome........I also had a fab dance with u jake, one I will remember for years to come, and even though half the time u can't pin pount what made it that special dance u were waiting for, it just was, accept that and make the memories, it just is what it is and if its fabulous for you then remember it forever.....

I think a lot of what makes a good dance has already been said. Knowing that your partner is enjoying the dance too is a great feeling like Donna said. Calle Ocho is just the best night because you're never off the floor.

i always love the end, when only the hardcore are left. You're tired and should go home, but there's you and your partner, addicted to the music and refusing to let music play without dancing. i always love finding fellow addicts at the end, those dances are special to me :)

Looking forward to some really special dances in the New Year.  Forced myself to take some time to relax but I'm going to be raring to go on January 5th!
